What is a memory verse?

  • If you are new to memorizing scripture, you may be unsure what a “memory verse” even is. They are simply bible verses that you memorize – simple as that!

What verses should you memorize?

  • Set your focus on any verse that you feel is important to carry with you daily. ALL scripture is worth memorizing, but not all of it is readily usable in your daily life, so pick the ones you think will serve you most often in your current season.

You’re probably reading this because you are a busy wife and don’t have much time to sit down and read — although this time is important to intentionally carve out of your schedule – so this post will be especially helpful to you!

Why should you memorize scripture?

  • It is our life source.  “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”  Deut 8:3
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” John 6:63
  • It is fellowship with God Himself in the person of Christ Who is the Word.In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
  • It keeps us from sin, growing and edifying us.  “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” Psalm 119:105 “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” 2 Tim 3:16-17
  • It convicts. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Heb 4:12
  • It is everlasting, moth and rust will never destroy it.Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Matt 24:35
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” Isaiah 40:8
  • You won’t have to look up the scripture and you don’t need a Bible handy

How can you memorize scripture?

If you have never done it before, are rusty, or don’t know where to start, here are some tips:

1. Have them printed in prominent areas and hang them up in your house where you will see them often. My top spot is in front of my sink since I have never been blessed with a window to look out of.

2. Write them out. Over and over!

3. Sing them in a song. Some great artists that make scripture songs are Dana Dirksen, Sherry Youngward, Brian Sauve, and The Corner Room.  You may not find this list of memory verses for wives already in song so you get the extra fun of making up your own.

4. Pick a version that you like that has more of a rhythm to it. Since there are different wordings, some are easier to turn into a beat than others.

5. Learn with a friend. Many people learn better in groups, or with some accountability to have learned it by a certain time. Ask a friend to grow with you.

6. Study it in depth. Deep study will give you more repetitions over the memory verses and you’ll probably end up memorizing it without even trying. Knowing what it means is really the true value of hiding the Word in your heart.

7.  Memorize one or a few words at a time, adding more each day.

10 Memory Verses For Wives

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.

A foolish son is ruin to his father, and a wife's quarreling is a continual dripping of rain

An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, that if any obey not the Word, they also may be won without the word by the conduct of their wives

An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God

And so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled

Do not let your adorning be external ... but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands.

Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
