This is how The Transformed Wife blog ministry came to be: “After two decades of marriage, interspersed with some good times but far too many struggles, we still could not seem to reach a meaningful level of closeness and intimacy in our marriage. We were both solid believers who loved the Lord and knew the Word of God, yet we couldn’t seem to find the oneness and harmony we knew God intended for us.” [pg. 9*]

Does this sound like you? You love God with all your heart, but you aren’t finding the happily-ever-after that Christians are supposed to just magically have the second they get married?

Who is Lori Alexander?

Lori Alexander is an older Christian woman who writes at her blog, The Transformed Wife (and a previous one called Always Learning). You may know her on Instagram for her hard hitting posts about anti-feminism and wives submitting to husbands.

[Did you know Lori was inspired by Debi Pearl’s book Created to Be A Helpmeet? I wrote a review on that book as well.]

Having been a Christian for many years, she thought her marriage would be a walk in the park, but she discovered there was a lot of work to be put into it. She needed to grow and after finally unlocking some deep truths that revolutionized her life, she started sharing online.

I am so glad! I always enjoy what she writes on her blog and Instagram. She is honest, uncompromising, and uplifting. She doesn’t sugarcoat hard truths or her own shortcomings.  Lori raised 4 children to love the Lord and is enjoying time as a grandparent of nine now. She’s the kind of woman with whom I’d love to share tea, walk in her vegetable garden, and just listen to for days.

How I found The Transformed Wife

A friend of mine recommended Lori’s blog to me and read her book and women’s bible study guide. She had such high praise, I put it on my wish list. My husband ended up purchasing it for me with some others on my list as a surprise.

The Power of a Transformed Wife Book Review

Summary

The Power of a Transformed Wife was written in 2016 after Lori had been blogging for more than 5 years.  The chapters cover just about every topic godly wives need to know about including:

Letting go of control, “Allowing Him To Lead”, what submission actually looks like, sex, purity for younger women, child training, birth control, homemaking, modest dress, financial discipline, thought life, clutter, way to man’s heart, and even eating healthy.

(It’s VERY hard to find a christian book for women talking about our duty to feed our families well because too many are afraid of being called a mom-shamer. Let’s call it what it is – settling for mediocrity.)

Each chapter ends with a section from her blog that is written by Lori herself, or an insight from a reader. There are some special guests in there too! (Find out who they are below.)

The book is well written (I have a hawk eye for typos), leaving out platitudes and fluff.  If your heart is open to serious truths, you will not finish this book comforted in how you performed today. You will have the desire to do better tomorrow, not out of shame, but by inspiration of Lori’s example.

Most chapters are short enough to read in one sitting. Sometimes, you could get through a couple before you drift off to sleep after your long day of hard work caring for your family.

And really, you can’t beat the price! I would pay double for this book because it has added so much to my life.  Grab your copy here today.**

Best insight from Lori

Lastly, I love how Lori has vision that spans generations. As an older woman reflecting on years past, she brings in the younger mother and shares about her own children when they were young to now successful God-fearing adults. The book feels like a baton is being passed to you, the matriarch of the next generation. You feel the whisper, “This is your calling now. I’ve done decades of work. I’m passing the wisdom to you now, daughter. Teach you daughters, too, so their children can rise up and call them blessed.”

Pros

  • Readable, quick
  • No fluff or encouraging mediocrity
  • Practical – finances, to thought life, to vacation sex
  • Wide variety of topics
  • Hear from Lori’s husband, her son on his wedding day, and their love story by her daughter-in-law
  • Pretty. I love the design! So feminine.
  • Affordable. Can’t beat it. Buy two and give one to a friend! Or put it in your daughter’s hope chest.
  • Could be used as a women’s group guide as it just focuses on what Titus 2 tells women to focus on

Cons

  • I wish some chapters were longer. Some are just a few pages.
  • Very hard to put down. I stayed up a few nights reading longer than I should have
  • It could  have smaller margins and font so it was just smaller overall. I can’t fit it in my purse. (Can you tell I’m really reaching for this con list?)

Final thought on The Power of a Transformed Wife

I truly wish I had read Lori’s book a few years ago when it came out in 2016. The biggest improvement for me personally is the huge reduction in arguing.  Lori has an amazing story of going cold turkey on arguing.

There are very few people in my life who have noticed things about me and said “just stop it”.  They’ve said it in love and I might have not appreciated it at first, but those few short sentences have been the most impactful to me.

Somehow, refusing to argue turns out to be a lot better advice than the other dozen mediocre marriage books I’ve read that all have a “how to argue” chapter. Seriously! That does NOT belong in a Christian book on marriage.  It never clicked until I read Lori’s book and it was such a stark difference that I realized I was a bigger contributor to arguments than I had wanted to admit before.

I was partly blinded by bad advice, and of course blinded by my sin.   I am so thankful to Lori for sharing what the Lord has shown her in the Word.

“God’s Word teaches us in Titus 2 that the older women are to teach the younger women how to love their husbands, be pure, and run their households well. When you learn what I have learned on my journey to becoming a Transformed Wife, you will experience the peace that comes from giving up your own will and surrendering to God’s plan. You will find that once you relinquish the desire to be in control and rest in His perfect will, your marriage will be free to become the one you always dreamed of.”
